We got up and had hostel breakfast, coffee, cereal, and a marmite roll. The change in air pressure up the mountains meant that when we opened the marmite lid it wouldn’t stop pouring out and making a sticky mess! I am sure some other guests in the hostel were watching and wandering what was going on! We got ourselves out the house and dropped our duffel bags we had used for the trek back to the tour company, Bioandean adventures. Next we found our way to the Sabado Baratillo, the Saturday market that our tour guide had recommended to us. There were clothes, textiles, fruit, meat, all sorts! We seemed to be the only tourists there, and some of the Quechua ladies selling their fruit and vegetables definitely had a good stare at us out of intrigue and smiled and said hola to us! Josh managed to find some second hand lightweight trousers that he had been looing for, inspired by our tour guides trousers! (Probably would have been good to have them last week as Josh ended up wearing his thermal leggings to walk in the boiling heat so as to avoid both sunburn and mosquitos!) However, he didn’t have many trousers to choose from as he is significantly taller than most Peruvians! Next we walked to Jacks café, which is becoming a firm favourite lunch spot for us! We had some food and then walked back to the hostel. We chilled for a little bit then headed back to the main square to people watch in the last hour on sunlight and go for a glass of wine. I definitely miss having long light evenings like we have at home, it is dark by around 6 like clockwork here. We ended up in a bar called Norton Rat, recommended by the lonely planet and overlooking the main plaza. We played some darts (which Josh loved, I was entertained for about 20 minutes then got fed up of being so crap at it!) We spoke to Alice on Facetime, it was Pride in Brighton today so Josh and I had felt a little homesick, missing the best party in the Brighton calendar! It wasn’t long before we were doing tequila shots, and we made some South American friends (the only gays in the village!) who we danced our socks off with into the early hours at a nightclub across the square called Mama Africa, we had our own little Pride celebration! I think we rolled back into the hostel at around 04:30, but I did hear a group of giggly girls get in a bit later than us so we weren’t the latest!

About us

We are Josh and Jen and we created this site so we could have somewhere to combine Jens writing and Josh's photos of our year traveling together. It is a little keepsake for us, and also a way for friends and family to keep up to date with where we are and what we are up to.
